Welcome to the Hyperedition. Upon entering the Hyperedition, you will be able to read the full text of the novel on the left side of the screen. On the right side, you will find a series of digital contents and tools, which are highly integrated thanks to the use of the latest technologies in the field of Digital Humanities.

Specifically, you will be able to consult:

a) the digital edition, encoded in XML-TEI and displayed in EVT1 with the restoration of deleted passages;

b) the critical apparatus of the novel, both in static version and in digital XML-TEI version displayed in EVT2;

c) lexicographical tools: the complete concordance of the novel, the formari, the comprehensive vocabulary of Pirandello's work, etc.;

d) multimedia resources: the audiobook, the theatrical version, films, commentary notes and teaching materials.

Selecting the “Manuscript” button will open a drop-down menu with three options.


a) “MS Edition”
Clicking on “MS Edition” will allow you to consult the Digital Scientific Edition of the manuscript, encoded in XML-TEI and displayed through the Edition Visualisation Technology (EVT1) interface. This will allow you to view the images of the manuscript and their diplomatic transcription in a synoptic manner.


b) Visualisation
Clicking on “Visualisation” will bring up a preview of the manuscript pages on the right-hand side of the screen, with an indication of the correspondence between the page and the printed edition, which will be displayed on the left. Clicking on the preview image will allow you to view the selected page in full screen mode.


c) Restoration
Clicking on “Restoration” will open a presentation where you can view, in order, a specimen of the restoration process, a synopsis of the original pages with the deletions, and the restored version.

Selecting the “Edition” button will open a drop-down menu with two options.

a) Criticism
Clicking on “Criticism” will display the critical apparatus in static mode with the variants relating to the various editions of the novel.


b) Digital
Clicking on “Digital” will allow you to consult the Digital Scientific Edition encoded in XML-TEI and displayed through the Edition Visualisation Technology (EVT2) interface. This will allow you to view all the versions of the text synoptically.

Pressing the “Vocabulary” button will activate an advanced search page for forms and headwords. Alternatively, while reading, you can select a word directly from the text and search for it within the same work.

By clicking on “Resources”, a list of resources will open, page by page, on the right-hand side of the screen. This will allow you to: a) listen to the audiobook of the novel; b) watch some scenes from the films based on the novel; c) watch some excerpts from the theatrical version; d) read detailed commentary on the language, characters, places and institutions featured in Pirandello's text.
