I Vecchi e i Giovani is the «vast and complex» novel in which the author believed most and which accompanied him from 1893-96 (when he began to conceive it) to 1931 (when he edited the last edition). A novel about the historical disappointment of the betrayed Risorgimento, overwhelmed by banking scandals and political corruption, it also contains the most bitter condemnation of southern Italy. The text is presented here in its original form, as published in 1913, which represents the unified conclusion (in immediate diachrony) of the long and tormented process of its creation.
