L'esclusa is Pirandello's first novel. It was written in 1893 and published in 1901. The Agrigento-born writer revised it twice, first in 1908 and then in 1927, significantly altering its original form.
A great laboratory for Pirandello the novelist, L'esclusa highlights his fundamental themes, reinterpreted over the years by the author in a humorous key that is, however, not very suited to the texture of the princeps.
